TABLE ETIQUETTE

Image
In the morning we were leaving to visit Sri Lanka Institute of hotel management . We said to our university friends that we are going to eat. By the way, we didn't get this thing very seriously. But after starting the session we could have understood the importance of this session and after finishing the session we got a confidence to handle a fork, knife, and a spoon.   The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) is the only Government approved premier Institute in Sri Lanka, which was established by the Government in 1964 to train young men and women in the complex field of Hospitality and Travel Industry. At informal meals, place the napkin in your lap immediately upon seating. During formal occasions, before unfolding the napkin, wait for the hostess to remove her napkin from the table and unfold it in her lap. Place the napkin in your lap upon seating. When leaving the table temporarily, put the napkin on your chair. At the me...

A Look Back

Image
Every session of PPD brought its share of fun and knowledge to us. But back in 2 years how many of us could have imagined that the word “PPD” would influence us to this extent. So, this article is to have a look back in what we learned from PPD. As I remember 2 years ago without a big hesitation I started to learn PPD. “Personal Progress Development” according to me was a useless subject those days. But after attending 2 or 3 sessions I started to love it. I tried to find the interest on it. I started to like this more than many other boring lectures we had. It did not take me much time to realize that developing inner skills is important as much as having academic skills to build my career.  PPD was a great platform to develop my soft skills. Among the many things I learnt so far from PPD, it has taught us to, how to perfectly manage our time how to work as team how to be a good leader how to negotiate with others how to manage thing in stressful times ...

Out bound training

Image
The Journey begins here!!! This was an amazing training program that I have ever participated. It was at Naval and Maritime Academy shortly named as NMA. NMA plays the most prominent role by imparting professional training for both Officers and Senior / Junior ratings in Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). The Academy is situated within the picturesque Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee. Therefore, it was quite a long journey and we got the chance to spend two days there. Day 1 We reached the camp there around 10 a.m. and after welcoming us we were offered a delicious lunch. After the lunch, we were divided into groups, "Alpha", "Bravo", "Delta" and "Charlie". They have planned several activities for us. First one was to go through a small rectangle made with ropes. But the catch is if we touch the rope then we die and any one holding you at that time also dies. We had to have a good strategic plan as to how to go through the rectangle and ev...

Art of living

Image
This day, not as other days we had a complete different PPD Session. The session was coloured by a special person known as Dr.Ajith Colonne. Dr.Colonne is a person who has devoted himself in educating the school children, youth and the general public, at an honorary capacity. The topic he spoke on this day is “Art of living”. According to him When We Think about art of living - there is an art to everything and living well is no exception. Of any art, this would be the one to master since it encompasses all the others. The art of living well is to make your life an expression of who you are , what you believe, and your hopes, dreams and desires. Of course, to create your life as a work of art is an ongoing, evolving, and creative endeavor. And so, it should be. As he said we can make our life a work of art by doing several things such as; 1. Make each moment count and live it to the fullest. 2. Establish an open, accepting and appreciative mindset. ...

Beauty of my second home

Image
No words can express the radiance of the blooming May flowers and beauty of birdsong that portrayed a symbol of warm welcome to the new entrants. All the beginners who arrived in numbers were received by the seniors with warm cordiality. It was obligatory for freshmen to be clad in white during the first two or three weeks and opted to use our own choice of dress later. Actually this a small memory I will never ever forget about my very first day to step in our university. So after that I was a part of this huge family and being under the roof of Kelani mother I was so proud as this one of the beautiful place I have seen in my life. So today I want to share about my university mother with you. The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena,  founded in 1875 by Ratmalane Sri Dharmaloka Thera  as a center of learning for Buddhist monks. With the establishment of modern universities in Sri Lanka in the 1940s and 1950s, the Vidyalankar...

Dream Trip

Image
Though we were asked to write about our dream trip, as a passionate traveler this topic made me go around the whole world just in few seconds. One day I want to travel and explore those beautiful places in the world not with my love, but myself only. Out of a lengthy list, I have selected a few of my dreams to share with you. Oia, Santorini, Greece Located on top of a cliff with a spectacular view of the Palea volcano, Nea Kameni, and the island of Thirassia, Oia is the most popular and arguably the most beautiful of all the picturesque villages of the beautiful Greek island of Santorini. Oia will charm you with its traditional stone houses lining the narrow streets, breathtaking blue-domed churches, and sun-baked verandas. While the village has its share of taverns, souvenir shops, and cafes, Oia is more quiet and laid-back than busy Fira and most people enjoy its quaint beauty by slowly exploring its narrow streets. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia Located about halfway between ...
