Beauty of my second home
No words can express the radiance of the blooming May flowers and beauty of birdsong that portrayed a symbol of warm welcome to the new entrants. All the beginners who arrived in numbers were received by the seniors with warm cordiality. It was obligatory for freshmen to be clad in white during the first two or three weeks and opted to use our own choice of dress later.
Actually this a small memory I will never ever forget about my very first day to step in our university.
So after that I was a part of this huge family and being under the roof of Kelani mother I was so proud as this one of the beautiful place I have seen in my life. So today I want to share about my university mother with you.
The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 by Ratmalane Sri Dharmaloka Thera as a center of learning for Buddhist monks. With the establishment of modern universities in Sri Lanka in the 1940s and 1950s, the Vidyalankara Pirivena became the Vidyalankara University in 1959, later the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon in 1972, and, ultimately, the University of Kelaniya in 1978. The University of Kelaniya has pioneered a number of new developments in higher education. It was one of the first universities to begin teaching science in Sinhala and the first to restructure the traditional Arts Faculty into three faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Commerce and Management. It has several departments not generally found in the Sri Lankan University system and some Kelaniya innovations have been adopted subsequently by other universities. These include the Departments of Industrial Management and Microbiology in the Faculty of Science; Departments of Linguistics, Fine Arts, Modern Languages and Hindi in the Faculty of Humanities; and Mass Communication and Library and Information Sciences in the Faculty of Social Sciences.
More than that I want to tell you, you will witness the unseen beauty of the university of Kelaniya when you start loving it from your soul. It’s a wonderful place to have your higher education. It's true that there are few big trees but they shelter the undergraduates and heals their busy minds. “Thal wata”,”IT gaha”,”Mee amba sewana” are few of these places. These places give a wonderful look at the University of Kelaniya. As well the trees around “ala bemma” gives a gentle evening site to all of the university students.
